The Environment and Rural Deve-lopment Foundation’s Apiculture Project seeks to contribute towards the restoration of ecosystems of the Lebialem Higlands. Launched in 2012, the Apiculture Project has supported small holder farmers with over 300 beehives. These farmers are located in commu-nities adjacent to protected areas being created in the highlands. The communities include Magha, Mmock-Le-teh, Fossungu, Bangang, Essoh-Attah,
Mbetta and Upper Lewoh. Approximately 4000 liters of dark brown and white honey are produced by these communities per year. The peak periods of harvesting honey are in the months of February, June and November. The commercialization of the products of apiculture is being managed by the Silver Back Com-pany. The Company serves as linkage between honey producing communities and urban and international mar-kets where it is sold.
In 2016, SBC Ltd marketed over 400 litres of top and non-smoking quality brown and white honey. The company ensures quality through field and laboratory research in Cameroon and elsewhere. Compared to other honey, Silver Back Honey is 100% natural. This is because the bee hives are placed deep in the rainforest where the bees have access to unpolluted flowering plants. As opposed to honey harvested from the grass fields where the bees collect nectar from plants polluted by chemicals or fertilizer.
Silver Back Honey is not diluted or adulterated as other honey found in the market. Silver Back Honey is well filtered and all debris removed before packaging. In Cameroon, Silver Back Honey is available in SBC office Malingo, Buea , Fontem, Silver Back Shop at Marche Tsimfem in Dchang, Mutengene and BIONATCAM Platforms Yaounde. This honey is also gaining grounds in South African Markets The major constituents of honey are sugars including fructose, glucose, sucrose, maltose and other di- and tri-saccharide sugars. Besides sugars, ho-ney contains a wide variety of chemical components such as proteins, fats, vita-mins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids and volatile scented substances. Honey is mostly used in the treat-ment or regulation of diabetes, acne, lower cholesterol pre-biotic support and other health related issues. It is also used to produce hair mask, candle, Polish, dye, beauty creams, and other cosmetic products.
